Athletes of the week

Meghan Webb

It is always fun to win an event individually, but overall winning as a team is even better,” junior Meghan Webb said.

Webb helped the Pipers’ win against Gustavus Adolphus with a final score of 184.775 – 179.525. In addition to the overall win Webb also tied for first place on the Balance Beam with a score of 9.350.

“The best feeling is when you nail your routine and all your teammates are just as excited as you are. It is just a fun environment to be in with a lot of cheering, hugs, and high fives,” she said.

To follow, Webb placed third in the floor exercise on that win against Gustavus. On Mar. 4, Webb and the Pipers are competing in the biggest gymnastics meet of the year, the WIAC Championships/NCGA West regional in St. Peter, Minn. In club gymnastics, Webb fell in love with the sport at age three. A skilled athlete, Webb stated how this acknowledgement helps build the momentum heading into the conference.

“This season has been incredible and we have so much to be proud of. The atmosphere in the gym has been great and the whole team has been in the mindset of wanting to achieve the same things.”

Jake Trondson (waiting for a reply on which picture he would like)

When playing sports, winning streaks are hard to come by, so it is a feat to recognize an athlete for who has yet to lose at singles. Hamline sophomore Jake Trondson, this week’s athlete of the week, is 5-0, at No. 2 singles; winning twice on the weekend. The Mounds View native has been playing the sport as long as he can remember, and having a tennis coach as a father didn’t deter him.

With just one month of experience with the team under his belt, Trondson has accomplished a lot of goals he has set for himself and is radiating with Hamline pride. On March 23, Trondson handed Tim Larson of St. John’s his first loss with a score of 6-4 and dominated in an impressive fashion against Sam Nettleton of Wartburg with a set of 6-0 and 6-2. The Pipers ultimately lost the game against St. John’s. Trondson also did shine at doubles with his partner, senior Matt Seracki. They are currently 5-1 with a first-place placement. The pair won with ease against Wartburg on Saturday with a score of 8-0.

The sophomore, who has a rigorous before game ritual of playing a game named Toon Blast on his phone shared how he felt at home with the team and his teammates.

Regarding winning athlete of the week, “It feels good to win it but from a team’s perspective, the recognition is motivating for the boys,” he said.
