Lacrosse team awaits a promising season

Lacrosse gears up for the season.

The Women’s Lacrosse program at Hamline University is fairly young and highly successful. The program first began in 2016 but it did not take them long to get placed in the Midwest Women’s Lacrosse Conference. In 2016, the team as an independent posted a good mark of 10-6 and finished the season with a five-game winning streak.

Last season, they joined the MWLC and finished the season with 9-2 (regular season), placing 3rd, to move on to a four team playoffs. In the playoffs, they dominated Aurora and Concordia and advanced to the NCAA D-III tournament, where they lost in the first round and closed off with a 15-5 won-loss mark. A phenomenal second season gave them recognition and respect from fellow opponents; they were picked as the preseason favorites in the MWLC by coaches in the conference regarding this season which is yet to start.

The success from last season saw the team bestowed with awards. Coach Karen Heggernes was named the MWLC Coach of the Year and junior Dana Almquist named Co-attacker of the Year. To follow, 10 players on the team earned a place on the MWLC All-Academic Team.

The team and program carries a lot of components from the fruitful last season including players, coaches and other surrounding help, but also more experience. Their season is about to start on Mar. 10 at Loras. There are many  games that a fan can catch, including seven that are played at Klas Field against heavyweights like Concordia (WI), Augsburg and Illinois Tech.
