Forgotten Apps

Staff

As college students, we are always looking for new ways to pass our time. We all remember great apps such as Quizup, Trivia Crack and, of course, Temple Run. Social apps are trends that go through waves in our society. One person we know gets the new app and then suddenly everyone you know is spending their free time (and even some of their work time) on these small games on our iPhones. Like a child with a new toy, our lives could not go on if we didn’t spend at least two hours of our day playing whatever new apps we have.

As we were writing this editorial, we thought it would be helpful to come up with a few apps that we played for a month or two and then slowly got over wasting our time on.

The first one that comes to mind for us is the simple app Draw Something. This app was played with another person where one would, as implied by the name of the app, draw something the game would suggest while their opponent would try to guess what they were drawing. The fun interaction of friends guessing simple images that they attempted to draw passed the time very quickly but this app had a lifespan of about two months.

Another app that came and went like the first time you had a beer is Fruit Ninja. Fruit Ninja is a fast paced app wherein players slash fruit while trying to avoid hitting other objects. This was more of personal game one would just play while they were waiting for something or maybe even in class. While we enjoy cutting up fruit images as much as the next person, this app had a popular life span of about one month.

A social app that everyone downloaded is Words With Friends. This scrabble-like game took on a new twist by allowing solo play. The competition between friends certainly got heated at times over who was most skilled at spelling, and then it soon died when that one friend downloaded the Words with Friends word help app. The lifespan of this one lasted a little longer at about six months, and some of us probably still play it every once in a blue moon.

Candy crush was the app for your parents, and I’m sure plenty of you can find your mom still playing this one. Candy Crush became very popular with the older generation of the app world and many young folks played it for a week or two before our grandmas started asking for lives on Facebook. Lifespan of a day before we knew our parents would get addicted to it.

The final app that comes to mind is the ever so popular Trivia Crack. This app came into our lives as a simple spinoff of Trivial Pursuit but, like Words With Friends, uses the connectivity of the internet to play friends or anyone at any time. The idea that users created the questions made for an interactive environment while belittling your siblings with how much smarter you are than them. The life span of this app was closer to a year because it was always a constant battle of knowledge between friends.

We are sure there will soon be another app that strikes up popularity for our pleasure. When it does, it will pass the time as we continue to fall for the next time-consumer.
