Something’s cooking in Klas

Pipers are now smelling a fresh aroma when entering Klas: the distinct smell of delicious Subway bread being baked all day! On Sept. 3, President Hanson and Dining Services swapped out the school themed Klas Café for the popular, student-requested franchise, Subway. Open 8:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday, the Hamline community and the general public can enjoy delicious “Jared approved” sandwiches.

Like the Starbucks in Anderson, Hamline students are able to use their declining balance to pay for their meals as well as using cash and credit. The student and faculty response to the Subway has been extremely positive. Larissa Thom (’16) agrees with the switch.

“I like the new Subway because there are more people in Klas to chat with. It is giving the center much more energy. However, I do miss the soups and array of food options (wraps, smoothies, baked goods etc.) we had with the Klas Café.”

Allie Boynton (’16) agrees that Subway is attracting more people during lunch time and appreciates the new food options.

“Subway has better sandwiches and the options are known to many people. They also have great soups in the winter, as well as cookies.”

Because Subway is an external restaurant chain with more accessible hours, students will be able to eat around their schedule instead of working around the limited Klas Cafe hours of operation. This is appealing to students because they are able to grab food whenever it’s convenient for them.

“I do like how convenient the hours are and that I can get food in between any of my classes,” said Thom.

Even though the hours of the restaurant are much longer, lunchtime is still the busiest time of day for the employees. Subway’s manager, Lynn, who also worked at the Klas Cafe, seems excited about the new rushes.

“Subway has brought much more traffic and attention to the Klas Center. Lunchtime is extremely busy, more so than before. The customers have all had a really great response to the Subway being here and Dining Service’s decision to switch seems right.”  subway

It’s safe to say that the Klas Cafe won’t be too missed thanks to its upgrade. For those who need a quick bite to eat or want to enjoy some people watching, check out the new Subway on campus that is sure to become the new Hamline hot spot.
